In spite of 98% of Vanuatu's total area consisting of ocean there has been very little progress towards the establishment of formal marine protected areas nor traditional management areas in the wider EEZ. Near-shore areas remain focused on local interests but there are significant opportunities to prioritsise and plan for the wiser EEZ.
