Terrestrial Protected Areas are clearly defined geographical space, recognised, dedicated and managed through legal or other effective means, to achieve long-term conservation of nature with associated ecosystem services and cultural values. (IUCN) As of 2026, there are 3 formally recognised Terrestrial Protected Areas in the Cook Islands: 

  1. Suwarrow National Park - 160ha
  2. Takutea - 120ha
  3. Takitumu Conservation Area (OECM) - 155ha 

This dataset contains data on the area sizes and shapefiles for the protected areas listed above.
